What Causes Constipation In A Child?

Hi, my 3 year old suffers from constipation, and has done since she first started on solids. I give her juices and she eats fruit etc but it makes no difference. My doctor told me it s something she will grow out of and prescribed a laxative for her to take, which works but I m just wondering is the constipation normal? Could there be something wrong with her?

Hi,

If child growing normally and there is no associated abdominal pain or blood in stool, we need not worry. Hopefully he will overcome this gradually. In such cases we have to continue laxative for few months followed by gradual tapering. If not done, it is better to done a serum TSH and Calcium level done.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
