What Causes Constant Diarrhea When Diagnosed With Ulcerative Colitis?

I have constant diarrhea; all day every day! I had a colonoscopy done and they only found mild colitis. This has been worsening over the past 4 years; to a degree that I have to have a minimum of 5 Imodiums a day...and NO that does not clog me up either. I am not a traveller and I live in a middle to upper class neighbourhood.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Ulcerative colitis is a condition with the primary symptom being diarrhea, which may or may not be bloody.

It is a difficult and persistent condition that needs prolonged treatment to keep under control. There are a variety of medications available to do the same- sulfasalazine, anti-TNF biologics, etc.

You could visit a gastroenterologist or a colorectal surgeon to discuss the same in detail. It is possible to get this under control so do not be disheartened.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Pranav Balakrishnan, General & Family Physician
