What Causes Cold Sores While On Contraceptives?

So, I recently began taking birth control and got two horrible cold sores!! I do get cold sores a few times a year (ever since I was little) but it just seems suspicious that I got two the day after I started the pill! I want to know if the birth control is the cause of my outbreak or if it s just an unfortunate coincidence.. Please help!

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query cold sores post intake of contraceptives is probably due to allergic reaction from any content of contraceptive pill or skin reaction due to acidic content. It could be due to lowered immunity of body and hormonal imbalance. Well these are caused by herpes virus infection and are transferred with skin to skin contact as well. Need not to worry. Wash the area properly with water and apply topical antiviral cream. You can take Acyclovir 200 mg orally as well. Apply cold compresses to affected area to prevent further outburst. Take antihistaminic drug such as benadryl as well if it is due to allergic reaction. Drink plenty of water. If your condition keeps on persisting visit dermatologist once and get it examined. Dermatologist will start treatment as per etiology and once proper diagnosis is ruled out. Take diet rich in fruits, green leafy vegetables.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
