What Causes Clogging In Arreries?

I've finally stopped smoking by switching to the new, smokeless "e-cigarettes" which contain only nicotine and flavor in a water-based vapor. My doctor told me I may have clogged my arteries due to the years of smoking cigarettes. My question is, was it the nicotine that contributed to clogging the arteries, or was it all the crap in 4000 chemicals in cigarette smoke that clogged them? I feel much better not actually smoking but I wonder if the nicotine itself will continue to contribute to clogged arteries?
