What Causes Chronic Cough Along With Severe Fatigue?

My husband has been sick for 6 months+, his symptoms are extreme coughing attacks, with large amounts of clear phlem, sore throat at times, extreme tiredness, and over this period of time he has been to the doctor three times, one time they gave him a nebulizer treatment in the ER and a prescription for a rescue inhaler, he went back to the doctor, they gave him an antibiotic, which he had a reaction to, then he went to his regular doctor they gave him a steroid injection, and the next time he went to the ER they put him on the cardiac ward for tachycardia and hypertension and a prescription for BP medicine, he is again very sick with the what seems like a lung infection this has been going on for a very long time he only has just a couple of days where he feels like he is getting better then it starts all over again, what can this be?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Sorry to hear of his disease. There are many causes that may cause a cough for long times. Common is like COPD, and bronchiectasis especially if phlegm is there with a cough.

Other include Infections or a foreign body or sometimes even growth. So it needs good assessment and probably tests of the lungs and chest scans if needed.

So I would suggest he should see a pulmonalogist for proper assessment and management.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
