What Causes Chronic Constipation Despite Taking Laxatives?

I broke my tailbone 40 years ago. I have no pain from it, but I go long periods of time without a bowel movement. Its has been more than 2 weeks now and I am miserable. I have taken approximately 10 laxatives in the last 7 days and still nothing. Could this happen? I ve always went long periods of time, but in the last 3 years I have went on a high fiber diet and it seemed to help but it is no longer helping. Any suggestions?

Hello,

Reason of your chronic constipation is neurogenic. Many neurogenic conditions do not respond better to laxative sometimes unresponsiveness of the gut occurs due to chronic over use.

Strongly suggested to get a colonoscopy, thyroid hormone profile done. Till then only lifestyle modifications will help to certain extent.
• Drink plenty of liquids preferably boiled water, coconut water, lemon juice, buttermilk, rice water, etc.
• Avoid all fat containing dairy products, oily, spicy, junk foods, and non-veg
• Avoid sleeping for 2 hours after lunch
• Avoid prolong fasting/overeating
• Remain ambulatory with regular walking, exercises, and yoga
• Refrain from smoking/alcohol if consuming
• In our clinic, we recommend castor oil which give good results
• Ispaghula husk work as bulk forming laxative with green leafy vegetables, organic fruits, whole grains, cereals, pulses, fresh curd with probiotics
• Keep BP, blood sugar, cholesterol, weight under control
• Avoid stress, anxiety
