What Causes Chest Pain After Laughing Hard?

I have a 16 year old girl who was laughing hard, threw her head back and heard an audible pop in her chest. She had immediate pain and says it hurts to breathe deep. This was about 4 hours ago. She can take a normal breath now but says it still hurts. Is this something we need to have her seen about?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It is likely muscular in origin. She can monitor the level of pain and consider the use of a warm compress to the area along with pain medications. The warm compress can be used 2 to 3 times a day for 10 to 15 mins. Anti inflammatory meds such as Ibuprofen or Aleve, may be helpful for pain relief.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
