General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for your query.
Brown spotting can be a normal occurrence before a period arrives. However spotting when period is not expected is not normal and needs to be investigated.

I recommend :
-an OBGYN consult
-a pregnancy test if sexually active.
-an ultrasound pelvis to look for ovarian cysts, fibroid.
-blood tests (estrogen levels).

Based on the findings of above tests, a treatment plan will be initiated.

Avoid Intercourse, doubling, tampons till we find out what is happening.
If you have severe abdominal pain and bleeding, go to the ER right away.
Hope this helps please let me know if I can help you with any further questions.
Wish you good health
