Hello, and I hope I can help you today.
Bleeding after sex, or postcoital bleeding, can have many causes. Some can be threatening to your health, such as certain kinds of infections and pre- or cancerous conditions of the
cervix. However, if you had a
PAP smear at the
OBGYN doctor and it was normal (which I assume it was- that is the first thing doctors usually check) you do not need to worry about cancer now or in the future.
"Erosion", or
ectropion of the cervix, is actually not a disease, but it is just the way your cervix healed after childbirth. Your cervix (the opening of your womb to the vagina) is covered with skin on the outside but in the canal of the cervix (the passageway that leads to your
uterus) is lined with cells that are delicate and have a lot of blood vessels. If your cervix healed with the canal partially open (which happens sometimes after childbirth) that tissue can be exposed in the vagina and can bleed when it gets scraped. The bleeding is not dangerous as long as it is not heavy or prolonged.
So you do not have to worry about cancer as a cause or potential complication of ectropion of the cervix. It can be difficult to treat though.
Sometimes taking birth control pills can help if you and your husband do not want to become pregnant again now, or a procedure could be performed to burn or freeze these exposed areas. But as long as you had a normal PAP smear you do not have to worry about cancer.
I hope I was able to answer your question today and that my advice was reassuring.
Best wishes and good luck with the further management of your condition,
Dr. Brown
