What Causes Blacking Out After Using Tampon For The First Time?

Hey, my best friend just tried using a tampon for the first time yet she applied it and when she got up she fainted as in she blacked out. She removed the tampon after she felt comfortable to stand up. What would cause such a weird reaction? My opinion would be that she was just really tense and nervous.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Thank you for your question and welcome to Health Care Magic. I understand your concern.

It sound like your friend got nervous about inserting a tampon for the first time. The condition you are describing shows that the reason why your friend fainted is due vasovagal reaction, which is a disorder that causes a rapid drop in heart rate and blood pressure, resulting in decreased blood flow to the brain and fainting.
Heightened emotions, such as panic, nervousness or fright, including seeing blood, inserting a new object on vagina, may cause a vasovagal attack.
I would recommend to your friend that the next time she uses a tampon, she must take a deep breath and be relaxed.

Hope I answered to your question.

Best wishes,
Dr. Ina
