What Causes Black/green Diarrhea During Pregnancy After Starting Iron Tablets?
Hi, Im 27 weeks pregnant and the doctor has just prescribed me iron/folic acid tablets, taking one daily as prescribed because a recent blood test showed I had low iron. I started these tablets yesterday and I am now passing black/green diarrhea is this normal??
Hello dear,I understand your concern. In my opinion the sideeffects of iron are gastric intolerance, nausea, gastritis, constipation or diarrhea. And the colour of stools is black due to excretion of some part of iron.So what you are experiencing is quite normal.Dont worry .If intolerance is more the formulation of iron might be changed .Even after changing that the intolerance is more IV or IM preparations of iron might be taken.Take adequate fluids to combat dehydration due to diarrhea.Take iron rich food like green leafy veggies, figs, dates ,zaggery and meat liver.
