What Causes Black Colored Periods While On Depo Shot?

I am on the Depo-Provera shot for birth control. I normally have no period, spotting rarely. But I am on my period now, and I've had to use a tampon because of the blood flow. Which I don't understand why Im having it like that. Also, The color of the blood is not red, pink, or barely brown, it's more like black and Im wondering why. Thank you
