What Causes Airy Sounds In The Ear?

I am 49, 160 lbs. female, good health, with allergies and occasional asthma. I hear a whooshing air, heart-beat sound in my right ear mostly noticeable during the night, or early in the morning. When I turn my head, bend over, or tighten the stomach muscles I just hear the whooshing air sound. Had a carotid ultrasound and things look fine. What could it be? (actually the sound is VERY similar to the sound of the ultrasound)

Hi,

Noted your history of whooshing sound on turning head, on laying down, getting up, straining and so on as explained by you, color doppler of carotids is normal.
The commonest causes I can think about are as follows:
The activities you have mentioned increases the pressure in nasopharynx area causing the Eustachian tune to open and rushing in air is causing this sort of a sound.
I would advise you the following:
First of all, avoid all such activities that instigate or enhance your symptom.
Get consultation of an ENT Surgeon and Naso-pharyngoscopy and other investigations done.
Audiometry.
Tympanometry.
All these things will give a proper diagnosis and thus allow a proper management as per the cause found.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, ENT and General Surgeon
