What Causes Abnormal Sensations While Swallowing While Having Thyroid Related Problems?
Good evening Dr. Rynne. I am a 67 year old female caucasian. I am being treated with 50 mg. of synthroid for sluggish thyroid. For about six months now I have had a funny sensation when I swallow. I seem to feel something in my throat. I don t feel any bulges, but the sensation is annoying. At night when I lay down, it is particularly noticeable Could you tell me what it might be?
When the thyroid gland is enlarged, it can produce symptoms like difficulty swallowing, cough, or shortness of breath.
You have thyroid goiter, considering that you have been treated with Synthroid. This is the reason for your sensation when you swallow.
My advice is to consult your treating endocrinologist because you may need to do an ultrasound of the thyroid gland to see the actual thyroid gland enlargement or if you have thyroid nodules and a TSH test to see if you need to modify the doses of Synthroid.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
