What Causes Abdominal Cramps Long Before Menstruation?

I am 18 years old and sexually active. I had sex with my boyfriend last week and we used protection as always. The condom did not break/leak, and never has. I am on Dianette birth control pills and have been on them for the past 8 months. Up until now everything has been perfectly normal. I take them every day on time. But this month, my period is due in 5 days and I am experiencing what I recognise to be period cramps around my lower abdomen and back. I usually get my period in the last three days of the week of the placebo pills. What s wrong? Should I be worried?

Hello,
I have gone through your query and understood your concern. i do not think there is any need to worry as your cramps seem to indicate the premenstrual state. Since you are going steady on the oral contraceptive for some time now, there is no need to worry about a breakthrough ovulation as in the first couple of months. Just wait for your next period and see a specialist if it gets delayed or if the bleeding is abnormal. You can take an uterine antispasmodic for pain relief. Sometimes, a pelvic infection also can cause similar symptoms. Hope this helps.
