OBGYN 's  Response
Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

Unfortunately, as women get older, you do not necessarily ovulate every single month, which can cause irregular cycles. This is not true perimenopause, but just a common occurrence especially in women over 35.

Your OB/GYN can do a hormonal evaluation of you to screen for diseases such as thyroid disease which can cause irregular menstrual cycles. Furthermore, your doctor can give you some medication which after you finish it will bring down your menstrual cycle. This will give you a relief from your bloating heartburn and other symptom – many symptoms of pregnancy are also symptoms associated with a buildup of of hormones that can happen when you miss your menstrual cycle.

So if you really are not feeling well, you can ask your gynecologist for a prescription for the medication, which is actually a synthetic form of progesterone. The drop in the levels of this hormone once you finish the pills can trigger a menstrual cycle. There is a possibility that your normal monthly cycle will resume completely after this episode. If it does not, your GYN can do a hormonal evaluation to see if there are any additional risk factors or explanations for your newly irregular cycles.

I hope I was able to adequately answer your question today, and this information was helpful.

Best wishes,
Dr. Brown
