What Causes A Sudden Sharp Pain At The Right Side Of Back?

I've been having sudden, sharp lower pain in the right side of my back for the past few days. A few mornings my urine has had a very pungent smell to it. The pain does not stay for a long time and does not seem to get any worse when I move around or do any specific activity.

Hi, thanks for posting your concern in the HCM.
Considering your current symptoms, I think that the following conditions should be ruled out.
1. Urinary tract infection
2. Pelvic inflammatory disease
3. Mechanical back pain
4. Radicular pain from prolapsed intervertebral disease
5. Sciatica
6. Renal pathology
7. Liver disease
You should have the following Investigations done-
1. Complete blood count, urea, creatinine, uric acid, LFT.
2. Urine for routine examination
3. Xray LS Spine-Ap/lat
4. USG whole abdomen
For the time being my recommendations are-
Tab Paracetamol 650 mg SOS for pain relief (min. 6 hr interval between 2 doses are needed)
Plenty of oral fluid, preferably 3 lit/day.
Avoid high protein diet, alcohol, carbonated beverages, spices
Avoid prolonged sitting or carrying heavy weight.
Abdominal muscle strengthening exercise should be performed.
Avoid unprotected intercourse.
You should also consult a local physician for clinical examination and further management or you can write back to me directly after having the reports.
Sometimes bowel problem may produce similar back pain. If you have irregular bowel habit, history of recurrent diarrhea, or altered bowel habit, you should have a stool routine examination done too.
For any further questions, please write back to me directly.
Regards,
Dr. Kaushik
