What Causes A Seizure In Sleep?

On April 10, my daughter had a seizure in her sleep. It happened about 6:40 am. We had an EEG and an MRI. The MRI was clear, but the EEG showed abnormal brain activity in the right side of her brain. She s 26 and never had a seizure. She went to bed the night before with a severe toothache, swollen gums, and probably a fever. Her doctor wants to put her on a medication for tow years and Im just nor sure.

Hello,

Starting drugs for control of seizures is a point of good thinking. In fact the rule is that we don't start drugs after first seizures. However, in a few cases we need to start it, and abnormal EEG is one reason to start drugs even after the first episode of seizures. However, this is not a very last rule. We can still think about it. Especially as she has seizures in sleep, and MRI is normal we may still think not to start the drugs.

Here we need to discuss the risk of other seizures and the side effects of the drugs. So you can talk to your doctor and may have a discussion on whether to start drugs or not. Not starting drugs always have the risk of other seizures, however this may be less than the side effects of the drugs. We need to judge.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
