What Causes A Large Lump At The Sight Of Amputation In Leg After Injury?

My boyfriend only has one arm and one leg, He was in a motorcycle accident a long time ago. His right leg was amputated above the knee. This morning, when he was moving from his wheel chair into his recliner, he slipped and fell right on his stump. He said it was VERY painful, and he is still in pain, almost 18 hours later. There is no visible bruise, but about two or three hours ago, there was a large fist sized lump under his skin, at the end of his stump. The tissue surrounding the area felt normal, but the knot was hard to the touch, and didn't feel normal. Now, he said that the knot moved. It is on top of his leg now, almost four inches away from where it was originally. I told him I thought it was a blood clot, but he refuses to believe it. He said that "If I had a blood clot that big in my leg, I would have passed out by now." Can you help shed some light on this situation? Could it just be the abused muscle, tightening, or could it be a blood clot?
