What Causes A Large Bulge In The Middle Of The Stomach Since Severe Cough?

hi, Ive recently had a cough caused by asthma and about 2 wks ago whilst having a bath, lying on my stomach I had a coughing session and felt a lump pop out of my stomach which was very painful. I thought Id pulled a muscle. I eventually went to my doctor who said it wasnt a hernia probably just a pulled muscle. My coughing has virtually stopped now but I still have pain on the left and a large bulge down the middle of my stomach. The bulge is only really noticeable when lying down and sitting up. The pain on the left can appear at any time. Any ideas what this could be ?? Many thanks...

Hi,

Painful bulge in central abdomen after bouts of coughing can be due to hernia unless proved otherwise. This can be diagnosed well by clinical examination by a general surgeon and high resolution Ultrasound. The hernia has classical finding of enlargement on coughing and is always reducible unless obstructed.

If this is not a hernia then it can be divarication of recti in which the mid-line being weak gives way to cause a bulge. Please get this confirmed and if hernia then get a plan for surgery at an appropriate time. Take care not to strain on abdominal muscles. This can not be a plain strain as there is no bulge in case of spasm, there is local tenderness and the swelling is not reducible.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question.
