What Caused Effusion Of Knees With Walking Difficulty After Taking Fever Medication?

12 yr old child with fever was on treatment with cefixime anh nimusulide for two weeks without relief and developed effusion of both the knees with difficulty in walking. knee joint motion was not painful and there was no tenderness.what could be the possible reason?

Hi,

This child had a fever and treated with antibiotics and then subsequently developed knee effusion. This looks like a reactive arthritis of the knees secondary to the infection. There is a synovial (lining of the joint) inflammation with fluid collection. If on examination there is considerable fluid detected this can be removed with a needle and sent for lab tests. Antibiotics can be continued till the lab tests arrive. supportive treatment for fever and pain and blood analysis should be done from the start.This should subside without any issues.
