Hello. I have had 2 miscarriages already and now I am third time pregnant. As soon as i found out I was pregnant this time I had mild cramping and my Dr referred me immediately to the Gynaecologist. At 5 weeks the Gynaecologist scanned me and detected a sac and yolk sac but it was too early to see a heartbeat. I went back a week later where I was 6.5 weeks and the Dr detected a heartbeat. I was pleasantly relieved but that soon followed by some semi sad news. The sac was measuring in too small and so was the fetus at only 3.2mm. The heartbeat 75 bpm. I have been put on Cyclogest and my follow up appointment is next week where i'll be 8.5 weeks. I am soo scared as the Dr has told me the chances of miscarriage are very high but there may be hope if after my follow up there's a big growth spert. Can you please tell me what I can do to make my sac bigger and also if all goes well at the scan will the baby have any defects? I just want to know the truth as Dr's seem to hold back on information to protect the patient from upset, but I just want the truth.
Hi, Thanks for the query. By 6weeks 5days gestation, the crown rump length of the baby should be around 9mm. Small size of the baby indicates possibilities of: -Wrong dates -Defect in chromosomes or hormones -Stoppage of the growth, impending miscarriage etc. Progesterone supplementation helps in maintainance and continuation of the pregnancy. So, you can take progesterone supplementation as advised by your doctor. You can go for estimation of serum beta hcg levels. If beta hcg levels are doubling at around 2 days interval, that suggest viable pregnancy. Repeat ultrasound after one week as suggested by your doctor, depending on that further management can be planned. Take care.
