What Are The Symptoms Of Shingles?

Can a person get the shingles virus on the cheek near t he eye without t he rash? Can this damage a nerve in your face? my GPdoctor says I had shingles in the past, but I never got a rash, it showed n my blood test 3 months later. I am seeing a neurologist because he thinks I have nerve damage in the cheek & around eye They want me to take this strong pain medicine for the nerves in face & I think I have the shingles virus again internally in the face & near my eye. I had this for 4 months in the past were I couldn t bend down without being severe pain.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Varicella-Zoster virus reinfection is called shingles. The virus after primary infection stays sleepy at nerve roots and when immune system is lower it is activated in shingles form. It may not be seen at skin rash but it cause severe pain on nerve dermatome.

I suggest you to take the medication doctor gave to you.

Best regards!
