What Are The Symptoms Of Fluid Buildup In The Middle Ear?

What are the symptoms of fluid buildup in the middle ear; what is the proper course of treatment; is it temporary; and will this problem resolve itself. My symptoms are a feeling of pressure in my right ear, an increased muffeling of sound and decreased sensitivity to volume (I can still hear lower pitched sounds, but my sensitivity to higher pitched tones is severely affected). When I shake my head vigorously I hear funny little high pitched noises that stop when I stop shaking my head. If I stick my finger in my ear to clear any blockage it has only a momentary effect; swallowing to relieve pressure on the inner ear has no effect. I m in no pain, but this is somewhat disconcerting.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted your history of feeling of pressure in right ear, fluid build-up, wants to know whether this will resolve on its own.
Your symptoms are classical of the following:
Fluid build up as you have thought about.
Wax impaction that is toughing the ear drum.
Fungus on ear drum.
This can be best diagnosed by the following ways:
Ear endoscopy by an ENT Surgeon along with nose and throat examination to see for any primary focus of inflammation.
If this is fluid build up, a proper treatment with antibiotic, anti-inflammatory and steroid if there is no diabetes can help for cure and takes about 1 -3 weeks.
Without treatment this may take more time to resolve hence the need of proper diagnosis and proper specific management as per the cause found.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, ENT & General Surgeon
