What Are The Side Effects Of Using IUD Coil?

Hi there

I really need some advice about the coil. I have had a coil for about 10years+ and i have been trying to look for possible danger of having a coil fitted for too long. I have been putting off changing my coil as the last time i had one taken out and fitted i had a really bad experience and I was in pain for quite a few weeks. I went to the doctor about a year ago and got the courage to ask him to take it out and he said he needed to know what type of coil it was. The clinic where i had it fitted has since closed down and I had the perfect excuse not to go back to him lol. I just need to know what danger their is for leaving the coil in and any symptoms i should be looking out for to know if I have a problem with my coil that is fitted. All i remember about the coil was that it was a 5 year coil and i must have had it fitted around 1999-2000.

Hello,

You have had IUD coil for over 10 years. IUD's should be replaced in proper time so that the efficacy does not get compromised. The time frame when the IUD has to be removed or replaced depends upon the type and brand of IUD that has been inserted. Hormonal IUDs work for 3 to 6 years. Copper IUDs protect against pregnancy for up to 10 years.

You should get clinically examined by a Gynae if you can't feel the IUD string, or if you think your IUD has moved out of place, or when you develop symptoms of early pregnancy or symptoms of cysts. Keeping the IUD over the time when it requires to be removed, reduces its efficacy and increases the chances of getting pregnant. If you don't remove or replace it even after its expiry time, it will cause you symptoms of exhaustion most of the time, you may be nauseous, have light spotting and cramping, serious food aversion and cravings as well as bad heartburn, etc.

You may get bad migraines, foul smelling discharge from the vagina, dizziness, chills. You are suggested to get it clinically examined by a Gynae, get it removed or replaced so that you may feel better and so that you may not be at the risk of getting pregnant. The IUD may possibly be more difficult to remove if left in place for several more years than approved. Stay away from addictions if any.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
