What Are The Side Effects Of Taking Exforge?

I have been taking exforge for high blood pressure. It controls the blood pressure but causes severe muscle pain and spasms in my right leg and severe headaches. My cardiologist does not believe the exforge causes the problems and does not know what to prescribe. What do you suggest? I have tried a dieuretic and this did not work and caused many side effects. What do you suggest?

Hello,

exforge is usually very well tolerated. Amlodipine may indeed cause headaches sometimes. The severe muscle pain is not common. Unexplained muscle pain warrants for measurement of the creatine phosphokinase (CPK) in the blood to exclude rhabdomyolysis, which may be a serious condition. If you've seen red colored urine then this is an urgent situation and you should go the emergency room. The potassium and sodium levels have also to be measured.

If you don't have any of the above then I would suggest splitting exforge into its ingredients that is valsartan, amlodipine and hydrochlorothiazide and stopping one by one the drugs to check which was the guilty one for causing the side effects. I would start from amlodipine.

I hope I've helped!
Contact me again, if you'd like, with the results of the intervention or the blood tests, for further guidance.

Kind Regards!
