Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
yes, my great nephew is 20 months old was born addicted to subutex . He was in the hospital for 5 weeks after he was born because they said he was going through withdraws. they gave him morphine in the hospital. I have custody of him now and I would like to know some of the effects the drugs are going to have on him while growing up. he is very high strung and a little hard to handle at times. he is very very smart!
Hello thanks for choosing HCM for your health related queries
I can understand your concern towards your nephew. He as been exposed to Buprenorphin during foetal period and then developed withdrawal after birth. Now he is 20 months old and has been successfully treated for withdrawal symptoms. If we consider his growth, various studies done on children born to opioid mothers has found no significant impact on growth. So as per my opinion there will not be much change in his body as fas as his physical growth is considered.
In terms of behaviour he may show some change in behaviour. He may develop some memory problems or slight impulsivity in school age but that is not definite. So no need to worry, continue to care him properly and he should grow like normal child only.
Thanks, take care
