What Are The Safe Withdrawal Methods For Amlodipine?

My doctor told me to stop taking Amlodipine because after a year of life style changes and exercise/weight loss my bp was 95-98/65. When I stopped about a week later I got rebound blood pressure 140/102, which I never got before. How do I taper off of the medication. I went back to the medication after that scare. Today it is 102/73.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
hello,
i can understand your concern.
i would like to know the dose that has been prescribed.
withdrawal hypertension is seen in about half of the patients who stop amlodipine. this is because the blood pressure was maintained in normal limits because of the effects of the drug.
102/73 is a bit on the lower side considering the blood pressure 140/102 without medication.
i would suggest if you are taking 5mg amlodipine once a day, reduce the dose to 2.5mg once a day.
monitor the blood pressure after this dose reduction for a month or so.
complete withdrawal of the drug can be decided based on the blood pressure readings during this period.
continue doing the physical exercises like brisk walk, cycling, jogging.
decreaese the salt intake of your diet.
do get back to us after following this.
hope i have answered your concerns.
feel free to ask further questions.
thanks for choosing HCM
