What Are The Risks Involved In Breaking Of Water?

My daughter is 37 weeks pregnant and 4 centimeters dilated. Her Dr. told her if she is 5 centimeters on Thurs., he will break her water because baby is low. What are risks/benefits. She will be 38 weeks on Saturday. Dr. Is concerned she won t make it to the hospital if her water breaks at home. She has a 45 min. Drive to hospital.

Dear madam,I understand your concern.in my opinion breaking of water is done to augment the labour process.there is no risk with that.only risk of infection will be when bag ruptures before the onset of labour pains .but in your case where cervix is already 4 cm dilated it doesn't harm and it rather helps by fastening the labour process.as soon as the bag ruptures delivery wont occur immediately.either it preceeds or follow the labour pains so which ever is earlier start to hospital immediately. but definitely delivery time depends on cervix dilation and position of head .45 min drive is ok you can make to hospital dont worry .
