What Are The Repercussion Of Infant Accidentally Drinking Baby Oil?

My 6 months old baby drank Johnsons baby oil this morning, but we did nothing to it because he is on medication. he has a running and we used cough syrup. All we notice is that, he was just sleeping throughout the day, has a watering excretion and he vomited this evening.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Baby oil contains harmful hydrocarbon which can cause aspiration pneumonia in the child when it is inhaled. Inhalation of baby oil is more dangerous than ingestion. Hence any inhalation and subsequent aspiration should be ruled out by a chest X-ray. The child should be observed carefully for the next 48 hours for any cough or difficulty in breathing.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Saranya Ramadoss, General & Family Physician
