What Are The Effects Of Having The IUD In The Body For 20 Years?

My mom just informed me that she has an IUD that she forgot to have removed. She must have had it in her body at least 20 years. What could the side effects of this be? She obviously needs to have it removed, but she is very scared.Let me know what she could expect. Thanks,Jenny

Hi,
I understand your concern.
- IUD is normally removed after 3 years of insertion. IN your mother's case it's there for for 20 years. It of course needs to be removed.
- The possible side effects would include
- it may get adhered to uterine wall,
- the long irritation may result in begnine/ malignant transformation in uterine tissue.( Can be known by MRI of the uterus/ biopsy of suspected part if needful.
-Removal may not be as easy as it is in normal circumstances. She may need removal under anesthesia/ hysteroscopic removal.
She should not be scared. modern medicine enables any procedure to be done, very comfortable for patient. Be in care of an expert gynecologist & be care free! Wish her All the best.
thanks.
