What Are Symptoms Of A Concussion?

My sister was told today that she has a concussion. They did no tests or anything to check for internal bleeding or anything like that and I am worried. She has been having some symptoms in not being able to talk properly and such but the doctor said that was because of the concussion and that doing a CT scan would hurt her more than it would help her which doesn t seem right to me. If she had internal bleeding of the brain would she have certain symptoms you don t get with just a concussion? Or would she still be alive considering the head trauma happened 3 days ago? Thank you

Hello. Thanks for asking from HCM.

I can understand your concern. Symptoms of headache, talking difficulty could be due to concussion or brain damage following trauma. It can only be confirmed after proper evaluation and Ct scan of head. In your sister, it is good that 3 days have already passed and she is till conscious, oriented.

In case of brain damage, usually symptoms like vomiting, focal deficit, fits, memory impairment may occur along with talking difficulty. One more important point is usually emergency surgery is needed within 4 to 8 hours for maximum benefit. If a person survives first 72 hours without need of surgery, it is unlikely he might need surgery.

From above discussion, it is clear that you are right about use of CT to confirm head injury, but use of it after 3 days is not very informative. You can still go for it to rule out brain damage. You should observe her for few signs of dangerous head injury
: vomiting
: fits
: decreasing consciousness
: onset of focal deficit
If any of above signs, then you must consult ER and get CT scan done. Further management will be decided after CT report.

Hope it will help her. Thanks. Take care.
