Undergoing Dialysis. Blood Is Coagulating To Fast. What Could Be The Reason?

Hi, my dad is in Dialysis 3 times a week today he was taken out of dialysis after only 30 min. They told him his blood was coagulating to fast and the machine was getting stuck. I was wondering what could be the cause of this, a few days before he got his catheter removed could this be the issue, however, they have already did the procedure in his seven times prior to the catheter removal. Unfortunately I am away from home and cant go with him to see his Doctor, any help would be greatly appreciated thanks.

Thanks for posting your query to Healthcaremagic .

Blood is clotting excessively means either there is dehydration or problems in clotting mechanism .

So first to make sure that he is not dehydrated check his skin , if it is very dry then it suggests dehydration . In that case you need to slightly increase his water intake .
But if skin is normal then you need to get these tests done : PT, aPTT, INR and revert back .
You can ask the dialysis technician or the nephrologist to increase the dosage of heparin which will make the blood thin and helps in easy dialysis.

hello this is dr chaitanya, most of the patients with end stage renal disease are in a state of procoagulating factor excess, this in turn is enhanced by hemodialysis leading to hypercoagulability .This can be prvented by measuring TAT complexes prior to dialysis and adjusting the heparin dose according to that.polysulfone membranes used in hemodialysis alsoenhance coagulability and should be avoided .
