General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and welcome to HCM.

Thank you for your query.

To address an enlarged prostate: this is seen in elderly males, and unless it causes any symptoms, it is usually not treated. Treatment is usually done with the help of drugs like dutasteride and tamsulosin.

The distended bladder could be due to the prostate enlargement. You need not worry about this. Also advised would be to check your PSA levels, as is routinely done in all cases with prostate enlargement.

Precautions and prevention would include: reducing fluid intake close to bed-time, reduce caffeine and alcohol intake. Other than this, medications are seen to provide most assistance in controlling the condition.

I hope I have succeeded in providing the information you were looking for. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications. I would gladly help you.

Best wishes.
