Twisted Ankle Badly And Fractured Bones. Took Clexane. Suggest

Hello,
3 and a half weeks ago, I twisted my ankle badly (grade 2 twist) and I fractured three bones in my foot (2 metatarsal and another one). I took clexane for 3 weeks. I also have a head problem and my neurologist recommends I stop the clexane. My worry is what to do with my still healing-foot to prevent thrombosis if I am not on the clexane injections. Thanks.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi, Thanks for using HCM.

Healing needs complete rest, and no movements. This will take time for 2-3 months as it is grade 2 twist and fracture bone.
Clexane is used to prevent blood clot, since you had taken for 3 weeks for ankle to heal and your neurologist recommend to stop it, you can stop now.
Consult your doctor for further management. Hope I answered your question. Feel free to ask me if you have any further queries.
Wish you good health. Take care.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.
This is my personal opinion that Clexane ( Enoxaparin - a low molecular weight heparin ) has got no role in the management of metatarsal fractures as the incidence of DVT (deep vein thrombosis) in these cases is very very remote. Atleast I have never kept any of my patients on clexane presenting with metatarsal fractures.

As you also have a brain problem, there is every chance that you may have intra cranial hemorrhage with the use of clexane (which at times could be even fatal). This could be the reason why the neurophysician suggested to stop clexane.

Just keep the foot end in elevation and move all your toes actively which prevents venous odema thereby lessening the chances of DVT.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
