Taking Yaz For Acne. No Periods. Side Effect Of Medicine?
Hi I started taking yaz to treat my acne problems. My gp prescribed it to me. I was not aware about when to start taking it. I started taking it midcycle. My date is 15th & I started the pill on 5th of nxt month. I have not got my period this month. Is it a side effect of the medicine. I am married & so I am worried about not getting periods on time. As usually I get it on time every month without much delay.

Hi, thanks for asking in Healthcare Magic.
Yaz contains Ethinyl estradiol and Drospirenone. Drosperinone is a progesterone with minimal androgenic action. Ethinyl estradiol is an estrogen. Apart from being used as OCP, Yaz is also used in acne to inhibit the androgenic influence in acne.
There are 28 pills in Yaz pack and the first pill should be started on the first day of the menstrual cycle. The first 7 pills are non hormonal. Remaining pills contain both estrogen and progesterone. You have started the pill on the 21st day of your cycle. You should have started with the 21st pill. Instead you have started with the 1st pill. This has altered your cycle.
Normally menstruation occurs when the estrogen and progesterone level drops suddenly. But the hormonal component of Yaz has prevented such a drop. Hence the delay in periods. You will probably get your period after taking 28th pill (2nd day of next month).
I hope this is helpful to you.
