hello,
Mr. Fernando Angel, first and foremost,
ranitidine is an antacid of the
H2 antagonist class, and not as effective as PPI (
proton pump inhibitors). The reason that you are not on these drugs may be because your doctor may plan to do a UBT (urea breathe test) to diagnose an H.Pylori infection (which is more accurate than
blood test for the same). This UBT test requuires PPI's to be stopped atleast 2 weeks prior to the UBT.
now, GERD by itself can cause a lot of symptoms which may include a burning sensation in your chest or just under the chest bone. palpitations however, usually do not accompany GERD. these symptoms may increase when you lie down and improve when sitting or standing. if this describes what you are feeling, than it may be because of GERD. if u feel your heart beat or feel like you are able to hear it (palpitations), they may be because of Anxiety, which is common before any procedure, like your
endoscopy tomorrow, or because of underlying
Hypertension (
high Blood Pressure), abut which you have not mentioned in your query.
as far as your endoscopy is concerned, it is a very important investigation to:
-see the extent of damage in your food pipe (Oesophagus),
-to see if you have any ulcers (gastric or duodenal),
-to take a biopsy to confirm H.Pylori infection (best test)
do not worry, GERD can be managed effectively, also keep a tab on your ldl.
regards,
Dr. Amitkumar Sharma.
