Taking OTC For Heartburn. Uncomfortable, Felt Like Heart Attack. Orange Discharge From Rectum. GI To Be Consulted?

I have been taking over the counter medicine for heartburn for about a year now. I take it everyday and still get it a few times a month. Very discomforting and almost feels like heart attack. My new symptom is an orange/oily discharge from my rectum. I have scheduled an apt with a GI doctor for next week. Is this the right doctor and should I keep the apt or see someone sooner?

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

A GI doctor would be the right person to investigate and management of any symptoms and signs related to the gastrointestinal tract such as the GERD or anal discharge that you are experiencing.

He or she may suggest imaging of the tract to investigate both the GERD and the new symptoms that are occurring.
In addition a blood test for H pylori would determine if this bacteria is present and contributing to your reflux symptoms.

You should keep the appointment. If your symptoms worsen significantly prior to this visit then you can see if you can get an earlier appointment.

I hope this helps
