Taking Fentynal For Renal Cancer. No Relief With Lortab For Breakthrough Pain. Help

Hubby on Fentynal 100 for stage 4 renal ca for the last 2 years with lortab for breakthru pain. in the last week the lortab is not helping the breakthru pain. He just finished a 2.5 week of radiation to ribs sternum , vertebrae hips and pelvis . we are seeing the MD tomorrow I am looking to see what else can be added for his breakthru pain

Hi,

Please ask your doctor if the dose of the fentanyl patch can be increased. Over time, tolerance develops to the analgesic effects of opioids and so, a higher dose is needed. If a higher dose of fentanyl is not possible, discuss with your doctor if stronger opioids like morphine can be prescribed. Nonopioid analgesic can be taken for break through pain but they will not be as effective as opioids and may also be bad for the kidney.
