Taking Ciprofloxacin For Diverticulosis. Swollen Stomach, Burning Sensation After Taking Medicine. Reason?
my husband has been getting treated with a server bacterial infection called diverticulosis, he was on iv they started him on ciprofloxacin 500mg (APX cipro), within a half a hr his stomach has had a uncomfortable burning sensation, as well as swelled. They had given him the same medication threw a iv and that to had the exact same reaction!! The nurses and doctor tell him that it is impossible, although it is happening is this a side effect not listed or is there another reason why this happens!
Diverticular disease occurs when there are outpocketing of the mucosa or lining of the colon through weak areas of the colon muscles.
The areas can become infected resulting in diverticulitis.
If your husband had a reaction to the medication when it was given orally and also iv then it is possible he is allergic to it. He may have to use a different antibiotic. You may want to speak to the doctor regarding your concerns.
Other aspects of treatment involve resting the bowel , clear fluids are used in mild cases. If the oral fluids are not tolerated then iv fluids would be needed.
I hope this helps
