Taken Norlevo After Unprotected Sex. How Did Pregnancy Happen?

My friend had unprotected sex on feb 3rd and took Norlevo the next day. she had her regular period on Feb 7th. she had another encounter on feb 19th and didn't take any pill. Now shw is 23 weeks pregnant as of today july 08th 2013. Does it mean that even though she had the Norlevo, and had her period after she was still pregnant. 23 weeks doesn't add up with the encounter on the 19th. it should be 19 weeks. can you answer for me.

Hello Good Evening,

Your query is quite simple, if you have some knowledge about menstrual cycle.

As you mentioned Norlevo taken and period come after 4 days, it means no fertilization occurred there.
Norlevo is an emergency contraceptive, acted on unprotected sex which done on 3rd February.
If it was not be taken, then also could be same result, because she was not in her fertile period of the menstrual cycle.

So forget that event, once period is come, means on 7th February, since then new cycle started, she did unprotected sex in fertile period of the next cycle, and not taken any norlevo, so there were very strong chances to get conceive, and she got.

Weeks of pregnancy counts from first day of last menstrual period date (LMP), not from the sex date, so according to LMP date (i.e. 07 february), 22-23 weeks of pregnancy is quite correct

Hope you understand this simple equation.

Hello, I would be happy to help you with your question.

If she is exactly 23 weeks on 7/8, and assuming normal fetal growth, then she conceived on about 2/11. Given the error that exists in ultrasound measurements (plus or minus a week), then she conceived on 2/3 most likely. Emergency contraception is not 100% effective and the bleeding on 2/7 was not a period, but rather related to the emergency contraception. While this is my theory, it is also possible, but less likely, that she concieved on 2/19. If there is a question of paternity, this should be sorted out after the birth.

I hope that this helps and good luck!

Hi, Thanks for using HCM.

Regular period on 7th and unprotected sex on 19th suggest that she had sex during unsafe period. After 3rd she had taken Norlevo and regular bleeding on 7th suggest her pregnancy is not due to it. So she can get pregnant in next cycle only i.e on 19th. The radiology report may altered due to growth of baby, wrong info given to doctor. So get scanned once again and consult your doctor for management.
Hope I answered your question. Feel free to ask me if you have any further queries.
Wish you good health. Take care.

Regards
Dr. Lohit
