Swollen Sore Throat. Took Antibiotics. Need Surgery To Drain A Swelling. Bacterial Infection?

18 yr old grandson was just put in the hospital with swollen, sore throat.He has been on IV with antibiotics for 36 hours. Did a cat scan when he was first admitted. They will do another tomorrow morning and if the swelling has not gone down then they want to do surgery to drain it. They say it is a something bacteria infection. Is this serious???

I read your query regarding swollen sore throat, you have not cleared the name of part of throat which is swollen.Usually the pus containing swelling occurs in the following regions of throat-

1- Quincy (paratonsillar abscess)- this is an abcess lying between tonsil and tonsllar bed.

2- Retropharyngeal abscess- this is an abcess behind posterir pharyngeal wall.

3- Vallecular abscess- This abscess lies at the base of tongue, though this is not very common.

4- Parapharyngeal abscess- This is also not very common, and is usually develops due to suppuration of parapharyngeal lymph nodes.

Here I would like to tell you that all these paiful swollen abscess are having good prognosis on surgical intervention. So please do not worry at all.

If it is a bacterial infection than that may also be manage by suitable antibiotic according to culture and sensitivity of aspirated pus.
