Swelling And Pain In Foot After Fall

I hurt my right foot. The pain is on the right side in that bone that sticks out, sorry I don t know the name. It s a little swollen and I can walk on it, but there is pain. There is also pain when I flex it down or try to roll it outward and when I drive. My friend was on my back and someone jumped on her back and I fell. I don t know if my foot rolled or what, but there was instant pain. I don t know if it s just sore or actually hurt.

hello,
how are you now?i will try to answer your query ..your ankle appears to have become sore .
There are ligaments binding the leg bones to the foot bones in the ankle area .When your ankle twisted (as it can happen when it is off guard..being a connecteing loose area)one of the ligament must have stretched and sprained.
best things to do in this case;
1. apply ice/cold fomentation
2. tie a stretch bandage at home
3. take painkillers for a few days .
4. avoid too much activity(out of the routine)
you will be better in a few days ...give it time to heal and rest.
If the symtoms do not reduce at all then you can take an opinion from orthopedician(bone/joint specialist )
Take care and let me know.

Podiatrist Dr. David Bernstein's  Response
The area of the foot that you are describing is, I suspect, the styloid process of the fifth metatarsal. It is the bump on the outside of your foot about half way between your little toe and the heel. It is a common area to be fractured and resulting fracture is one of two types; an avulsion fracture or a Jone's fracture. You will need an x-ray to determine if it is fractured and if it is, which of the two types of fractures has occurred. It is important to determine which type of fracture since the avulsion fracture is relatively minor and usually heals well with minimal immobilization. The Jone's fracture, unfortunately, is much more serious and can take much more time to heal; sometime requiring surgery. Even if there is no fracture, there could still be significant soft tissue injury. There are two tendons in that area that can be strained or torn; the peroneal longus or the peroneal brevis. Both of these tendons function to flex the foot down or roll the foot outward as you have indicated as maneuvers causing you increased pain. If one of these structures are involved it may take many months to fully heal the injury. Whether it is a bone fracture or a tendon injury it is usually best to elevate your foot and apply compression to reduce the swelling, and immobilization such as a walking brace or caste to allow the injury to heal.
