my husband is not living in the same state so we do not have a typical sexual relationship. I just had an abdominal hysterectomy and was wondering do i still need to wait the full 6 weeks before orgasm if it is brought on through masturbation instead of through intercourse.

Hello,

You had an abdominal hysterectomy done. It is safer to wait for at least 6 weeks before indulging in any type of sexual activity. This will allow the scar from the surgery to heal properly and any vaginal bleeding or discharge to stop. You are suggested patience. Ideally by 6 weeks you should be ready for sex, but in case you feel that you aren’t ready to have sex after six weeks because of slight pain.

You have not mentioned if your doctor has removed your ovaries during the hysterectomy procedure or not but if it has been removed you will need a hormone replacement therapy for better sexual relationship post surgery. Having a hysterectomy doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to have an orgasm while having sex. Your labia and clitoris are still intact, and they are very sensitive. Don't worry.

If you had a good sex life before hysterectomy, then you’re more likely to maintain it after the surgery. Sometimes, you may experience vaginal dryness after hysterectomy, reduced sensation upon vaginal penetration, etc. Avoid getting depressed and get connected to a Counselor. Using vaginal lubricants will be helpful. After you recover you are suggested to have sex more frequently. This will help to increase the flow of blood to your vagina and will keep the tissues healthy.

Do regular exercises to strengthen your pelvic floor. Healthy pelvic floor muscles will help to get stronger orgasms. Take time to get aroused before having sex. During arousal, moisture released in helps protect the tissues and also makes sex comfortable. After hysterectomy always use a lubricant (water-based) to help with vaginal dryness.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
