Suggest Treatment For Viral Fever

My son is 15 yrs old and has had a fever over 102 for the past 5 days. Currently it is 103.2. I took him to our local urgent care on Saturday and they told me it was viral. I m at a loss. I am giving him Tylenol and ibuprofen alternating every 2 hours. Cool packs under his arms, cool showers and I don t know what else to do. Any suggestions?

Hello,

Giving only Tylenol and Ibuprofen may give temporary relief from fever and other symptoms but fever may return when the effects of medicines will subside.

I would advise to start with an antibiotic course. Cefixime 200 mg (Topcef) twice a day for five days would help with resolution of infection. Continue with Ibuprofen/Tylenol when needed for symptomatic relief. Taking Ranitidine Hydrochloride 150 mg (Zinetac) twice a day will help with acidity caused by antibiotics. Let him rest as much as possible.

If the symptoms and fever don't resolve with this antibiotic course, he may need to go for a blood test for complete blood count (CBC) to reach a confirmed diagnosis.
