Suggest Treatment For Swollen Bald Patches On Scalp

Hi, I have been taking nystatin and trimcinolone acetonide cream for a year now. The cream doesn t seem to fully stop the anti fungal on my head. I have recently started getting bald spots and swelling as well, I believe it may be alopecia areata. Anything you could prescribe for the anti fungal and bald spots? Thanks!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

To me, the very first thing is to get tested in order to determine if the bald spots are due to alopecia areata or any other pathology. So, better run skin scrapping examination of your scalp and examining your heard hair under microscope. Meanwhile, to me, you should run a complete blood count and transferin level together with thyroid function test to rule out anemia and thyroid problems respectively. If fungal infection is confirmed, the most effective treatment for my patients is terbinafin cream locally in combination with oral terbinafin and skin supplement containing vitamin E, A, D, etc.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
