Suggest Treatment For Strep Throat And Swollen Tonsils

I get strep throat at least 3 times a year, and my tonsils swell at least once a month, a few times cases have been severe that's sent me to the ER, and my family doctor refuses to write me a referral to get them removed, becuase she says I don't need to. Do you think I should get them removed? Or what should I do?

Hi.
Welcome to HCM..

As per your complain it seems that strep throat is a bacterial infection of throat leading to Pharyngitis and Tonsillitis and a person can get infected 3 to 4 times in an year and it is not an abnormal finding..
Due to this only you are not advised to get the tonsils removed and it is not a wrong advise given to you..
So do not panic and take appropriate medications for relief..
For confirmation consult an Otolaryngologist or an ENT expert and get evaluated..
He can do investigations like Throat swab culture can help in diagnosis..

You can be advised:
-Antibiotics like Augmentin OR Azithromycin to resolve the infection..
-Anti-inflammatory painkillers like Ibuprofen can be taken to relive pain. -----Doing warm saline gargles, steam inhalation and using a humidifier in your room can be very much relieving.
-You can also suck throat lozenges to soothe the throat..
-Gargle with numbing mouthwash containing Lignocaine..
-Gargle with antiseptic solution like few drops of betadine in water..
-Chew Vitamin C pellets to boost up the immunity..
-Avoid spicy and chilled foods..

Hope this helps..

Regards..
