Suggest Treatment For Sore Throat And Swollen Lymph Nodes

Thank you very much for responding to my enquiry, my case is that on the 19th of October I had intercourse with a sex worker and the condom broke. A few days later I had runny nose that lasted about 3 weeks, then end of those 3 weeks I had sore throat where I had to clear my throat most of the time as there is much mucous ( I m still having the sore throat ), its white in color, I also noticed 3 swollen lymph nodes on my neck. I was worried, I took a 4th generation hiv rapid test on 14th of October and it turned out negative, I also took a another 4th generation hiv rapid test on 23 of October and it was negative. Moreover I did a blood test, the result came out normal according to my doctor....but I m still worried as the sore throat is still present and I ve never had a sore throat that lasted this long, is there a possibility that 4th generation test would fail to detect hiv at the 4 - 5th week?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Early HIV signs and symptoms may include:

Fever, Headache, Sore throat, Swollen lymph glands, Rash, Fatigue.

These early signs and symptoms usually disappear within a week to a month and are often mistaken for those of another viral infection. During this period, you're highly infectious. More-persistent or -severe symptoms of HIV infection may not appear for 10 years or more after the initial infection. The 4th generation HIV test is the test of choice approved by FDA, but the test must be repeated after 3 months as few people have delayed response to infection. Kindly, re-take the test at 3 months followed by 10 months to be assured for rest of the life.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ayesha Shareef
