Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

Unfortunately, injury of your tailbone, also known as your coccyx, is extremely difficult to recover from. If you break your coccyx, it can take between six and nine months to heal.

The cortisone shot you received previously may have given you relief, but different doctors have an opinion whether multiple courses of steroids are appropriate. Certainly, cortisone shots are safe during pregnancy for the baby as steroids can be safely used in all trimesters of pregnancy.

At this point, the best and safest way to treat your pain is with the direct application of ice or cold packs to the area. Sitting on a bag of ice wrapped in a towel but next to your skin, 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off, will help acutely with a lot of pain relief.

If you are allergic to acetaminophen, you can take small amounts of narcotic pain relievers safely during pregnancy. You should discuss this with your obstetrician who may be able to prescribe some for you. In the meantime, I would seek making appointment with a physician who treated you previously for your tailbone injury to discuss whether or not another cortisone injection would be appropriate treatment.

I hope I was able to adequately answer your question today, and that you feel better soon.

Best wishes,

Dr. Brown
