Suggest Treatment For Severe Stomach Cramps And Lower Back Pain In Child

I m a single father of 2. Once married and widowed. my daughter is having cramping and tears up but i can never give her any pain meds, over the counter or anything. I try Camomile tea, yogurt, and heat packs. It helps sometimes. she also says her lower back hurts. She is 5 feet 80 lbs. I think she might be having her menstrual cycle. So i was hoping 11 year olds could take a low dose midol or something to control the cramping what to do?

Hello,

For severe stomach cramps and lower backache due to periods she can take Midol (Naproxen), if she is in discomfort for the whole day. Spasmol (Spasmoproxyvon), one SOS when required is also effective in severe stomach/uterine or intestinal cramping. If the pain is milder she can take acetaminophen (Tylenol), one SOS when required. Period pain is often associated with indigestion and formation of gas (gastritis).

Sometimes, taking antacids is enough for relieve. She can take a mild dose of Ranitidine, Rantac (150mg), one SOS when required. Help her stay hydrated, well fed and relaxed. Not much to worry, these are normal female symptoms. She is just 11 yrs now, have a little patience, she will adjust soon as she grows.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
